Alec Baldwin has quit Twitter once again — but this time it seems he's leaving for good.

The actor had been having a tough time on social media in recent weeks, but the final straw for him was the backlash he received for a joke he made about Gillian Anderson's accent.

Alec Baldwin quits Twitter after Gillian Anderson accent joke

Baldwin's Twitter is no longer live, but he reportedly retweeted a story about fans getting confused by Anderson's natural American accent, because she often portrays British characters on-screen.

With the story, he wrote: "Switching accents? That sounds ... fascinating." The joke wasn't received well by Anderson's fans, though Baldwin appeared to be referencing his wife Hilaria's recent controversy about "faking" her Spanish heritage and exaggerating an accent.

The response to the tweet angered Baldwin, as he deactivated his account and ranted about Twitter users and Americans in an Instagram video shared on Wednesday night. In the video, he recounted his joke without naming Anderson, saying of the accent story: "I just wrote, 'Oh, that's interesting.' And of course you can't do any irony on Twitter.

"You can't do any irony in the United States anymore because the United States is such an uptight, stressed out place — such an unpleasant place right now," he added in the nine-minute video.

In the video, Baldwin said that Twitter is a place where "all the a**holes in the United States and beyond go to get their advanced degrees in a**holiness," so he will be heading elsewhere online for the up-to-the-minute news and "good writing" that he once enjoyed on Twitter.

Alec Baldwin's rough ride on social media

Earlier this week, Baldwin was also taking it to rude commenters on his Instagram page after he and wife Hilaria shared news of their sixth child's arrival via surrogacy. Some responses featured expletives and one echoed his Instagram video, as he'd said: "Americans are people who know less about how to live a peaceful, healthy life than most of the civilized world."

Baldwin also appears more serious about his Twitter leave this time around. Earlier in 2021, he said "goodbye for now" after complaining about the toxic environment on Twitter following his wife's heritage scandal. But he never deactivated his account, as he did this week.
