Ben Kingsley as "Gandhi" in Richard Attenborough's 1982 film gained Kingsley much critical acclaim. Born December 31, 1943 as Krishna Pandit Bhanji, Kinglsey was born to his English mother and his father who was born in Kenya but of Gujarati Indian descent.
The English actor would rise to fame with the Royal Shakespeare Company starring in plays including As You Like It and A Midsummer Night's Dream. While Kingsley would make the transition to film and television in the early 1970s, he would rise to fame with 1982's Gandhi.
