David Arquette has opened up about the wrestling accident in 2018 that changed his life! In an exclusive interview for People, Arquette revealed why the incident made him more self-aware, causing him to reflect on his choices.

Arquette says he was "totally lost" after stabbing

Arquette had put himself in a dangerous situation to begin with, taking part in a "death match" with wrestler Nick Gage. However, he didn't anticipate accidentally getting stabbed in the neck with a light bulb while in the ring, suffering life-threatening injuries.

"I thought I was dying," Arquette said of the scary incident, which is featured in an upcoming documentary about the actor called You Cannot Kill David Arquette. "I got out of the ring and I was totally lost. I couldn't see and I couldn't hear." As People mentions, Arquette was then immediately taken to the hospital, getting stitches and surgery.

Arquette talks about why he felt pain "on purpose"

Arquette's close call forced him to reflect on why he was making decisions that were often dangerous ones. "There was a certain carefree, daredevil aspect about the way I lived life previously," he told People. "But I didn't want to die."

"With the death match, I was doing it on purpose. I was feeling pain to numb pain," he explained. "Afterwards, I realized I needed to be kind to myself." By going to therapy and having the support of wife Christina McLarty Arquette however, the actor was able to start working towards a healthier way of living.

"I learned to love myself," Arquette shared. "I had to stop being self-destructive and making choices that were throwing bombs." While he isn't sure if professional wrestling will be something that is in his future again, Arquette said that he has a different approach to his Hollywood career these days!

Arquette on his career: "I started feeling like a joke"

Arquette said that his inability to be pigeonholed into a genre made him struggle with his identity in the industry. "I always approached Hollywood in a different way," he explained. "I did kids movies, I did horror movies, I did comedies. People didn't really know where to put me."

"And I'm a different kind of character. I'm silly, I wear flamboyant clothes," he continued. "That can paint a picture in people's heads of who I am and I started feeling like a joke."

Arquette says he's "trying to live in the moment"

Arquette said that instead of being concerned about what people may think of him though, he's doing his best to take things as they come! "I'm not worried about the future, I'm trying to live in the moment," he shared.

"I'm not invincible and there have been times in my life where I didn't want to go on," Arquette admitted. "But I'm proud of my kids, I'm proud of my wife, and I'm proud of my family. And when you start to like yourself, it's easier to feel at peace."

With this approach to life, it sounds like Arquette is doing better than ever! And in exciting news for fans of the actor, he's even on board to reprise his Scream role alongside ex-wife Courteney Cox in the franchise's upcoming sequel to be released in 2022!
