A few weeks ago Duffy posted and deep and beautiful message to Instagram about the reason why she had not been producing music or performing. She stated "The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days. Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There's no light way to say it."

"Mercy" Singer Duffy Shares Her Message Through New Song

She then sent a message to BBC Radio 2's Jo Whiley with the song attached to be played in hopes that it "lifts spirits" during worldwide lock down. She said it "feels exciting and liberating for me to talk" and in releasing this song "I do feel freer."
