Through a message on his social media, the actor (formerly known as Ellen Page) came out as transgender.

"I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot," he wrote. "I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this this place in my life."

The Umbrella Academy star also said he felt "overwhelming gratitude" for the people who have supported him so far, but he acknowledged that his joy, while real, is also "fragile."

"I also ask for patience… The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I'm scared of the invasiveness, the hatred, the 'jokes' and of violence."

Page also spoke out against those who discriminate against trans people, politicians who criminalize trans healthcare, and listed troubling numbers on violence against the trans community in the U.S.

"Enough is enough," he said to those who oppose trans human rights. "You aren't being 'cancelled,' you are hurting people. I am one of those people and we won't be silent in the face of your attacks."

"To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better."
