Actor James Michael Tyler has passed away just four months after he went public with a stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

Tyler died at his home today in Los Angeles, his rep told The Hollywood Reporter. His death comes three years after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was 59.

Tyler was best known for playing "Gunther" the barista on the beloved sitcom Friends. A fan-favourite, he appeared in over 100 episodes and all 10 seasons of the series.

Despite his illness, Tyler also rejoined his former castmates for the long-awaited Friends reunion special in 2021. He opened up about his tragic diagnosis shortly after.

For Tyler, other screen credits included episodes of Just Shoot Me!, Scrubs, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Episodes.

Tyler had announced his stage 4 prostate cancer in an emotional interview with Today in June of this year.

He said the cancer had spread to his bones, and that he was proud to have achieved his goal of making it to his 59th birthday in May.

The actor had shared that he was opening up about his devastating cancer battle to encourage viewers and fans to get early screenings for the disease. Now, four months later, he has sadly passed on.

He's survived by his second wife, Jennifer, whom he married in 2017.
