Imelda Staunton Reveals The Biggest Challenge Playing The Queen In The Final Series Of 'The Crown'

Imelda Staunton can rock any character she chooses to play, but this time the actress is revealing the challenges she's facing as she portrays the Queen of England in the final chapter and series finale of the hit Netflix series The Crown.

Despite being an award-winning actress for her many roles, Imelda Staunton is opening up that it's not been all roses for her as she has taken on the difficult task of playing the Queen of England in the final series of The Crown.

Playing such an iconic role, Staunton is honest about the obstacles she faces navigating the character with an audience very familiar with its subject.

Opening up to a BBC radio show, Women's Hour, Imelda Staunton held nothing back as she recounted the difficult days of filming as she tackled a very familiar and well-known character, none other than the Queen of England.

The Crown will air its final season on Netflix, and of course, will feature a more current Queen Elizabeth than what we've previously seen in seasons before.

"I think my sort of extra challenge as if I needed it, is that I’m now doing the Queen that we’re a little more familiar with," she explained to the host.

The actress admitted she feels it will hold a different sort of challenge compared to the previous actresses that played the Queen, Claire Foy in seasons 1 and 2, and Olivia Colman, in seasons 3 and 4.

"With Claire Foy, it was almost history and now I’m playing one that people could say 'she doesn’t do that,' 'she’s not like that,' and that’s my personal bête noire," she said.

Colman has previously said that handing over the role to Staunton wasn't hard, as she's apparently already perfected the regal walk, saying at a press conference Staunton has "already got a much better walk than me."

Staunton also announced her stance on the controversy surrounding the show and weighed in on whether or not she believes Netflix should put a disclaimer saying the show is a work of fiction.

"This isn’t verbatim; this isn’t taken from diaries," she said. "You’ve got to use your imagination, and I’d like to allow the audience a bit of intelligence."

Season 5 of The Crown won't air until 2022.
