Janel was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 30th, 1988 to European and Chinese bodybuilders Joanne and Mark Phillip Parrish. At only age six, she fell head over heels for performing after seeing The Phantom of the Opera. Janel learned the piano, studied acting, singing, tap, and jazz, entered talent contests, and even became a well known local!
Her family then moved to Los Angeles to further Janel's dreams! She landed a few impressive theater roles and was even rescued by David Hasselhoff's character "Mitch Buchannon" in Baywatch. Janel secured a few more shows like The Bernie Mac Show, Zoey 101, and Heroes!
Finally, she landed her breakthrough role of "Mona Vanderwaal" on the smash-hit series Pretty Little Liars. Janel even earned the Teen Choice Award for Best TV villain. She went on to star in Hawaii Five-0, Drop Dead Diva, and Netflix's To All the Boys I've Loved Before. She also made it to third place on the 14th season of Dancing With the Stars with her partner Val Chmerkovskiy.

In 2016 she met and began dating chemical engineer Chris Long. Chris proposed to her a year later during a romantic walk in the park and told Entertainment Tonight, "He got down on one knee and I just dissolved into tears! I'm over the moon. I get to marry the most amazing man I've ever met. I feel like the luckiest girl alive!"
Finally, the sweet couple married on September 8th, 2018 on Oahu with a bunch of her Pretty Little Liar co-stars in attendance. The two are always gushing about each other on social media.
