Julie Andrews: Through The Years With The Actress

Dame Julie Andrews is one of the great actresses of all time. The screen and stage star has had a legendary career that includes an Oscar win and roles in some of the most famous films ever.

Andrews was born Julie Wells on Oct. 1, 1935, in Walton-on-Thames, England. The young Julie Wells took her stepfather's surname, Andrews, when her mother remarried in 1943.

Her parents were stage performers, and Andrews showed a talent for acting at a young age as well. She performed in the theatre as a child and began to find major success by the late 1940s. 

Andrews's career really took off in the 1950s when she became a Broadway star in her early 20s. She's remembered for acting in My Fair Lady, and she began to appear in several TV musicals in the late '50s.

She's seen here in one of her first screen roles in the 1956 show Ford Star Jubilee. Her big-screen breakthrough was soon to come.

It was also around this time that Andrews got married for the first time. She and set designer Tony Walton tied the knot in 1959 and would remain together until 1967. Andrews's daughter Emma was born in this first marriage.

Then came the role that set Andrews on the path to superstardom: Mary Poppins. The actress landed the lead in the classic 1964 Disney musical that's a beloved pop culture staple to this day. 

For Mary Poppins, Andrews became one of only a few stars ever to win an Oscar in their film debut. Here she is with her Best Actress win along with the film's songwriters, who also took home two award wins on the night.

In case her history-making work in Mary Poppins wasn't enough, Andrews followed up that role with another all-time classic: The Sound of Music. She played "Maria Von Trapp" in the 1965 film which also won her a Golden Globe Award.

After her two best-known films, Andrews continued with a range of other memorable movies, including titles like The Pink Panther, Victor/Victoria, and the Hitchcock classic Torn Curtain — seen here with co-star Paul Newman.

The 1960s also saw Julie Andrews marry for a second time, to her long-time husband Blake Edwards. They were together from 1969 until his death in 2010. Edwards was a filmmaker who also directed his wife in several movies over the years, including That's Life! and S.O.B.

After a quiet few years, Andrews revived her career in the 2000s with The Princess Diaries. She's also appeared in other popular films like Enchanted and started her own children's show Julie's Greenroom.
