In an emotional turn of events, Kristen Bell is getting candid about her husband Dax Shepard, and his ongoing battle with addiction and substance abuse.
While appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Bell shared how her husband is doing following a relapse with pain medication after his motorcycle accident this past August.
Kristen Bell opens up about Dax Shepard's relapse
While appearing with Ellen DeGeneres on her Wednesday episode, Kristen Bell got candid about how she's handling her husband's relapse and opened up about how their family is coping.
After being sober for 16 years, Dax Shepard revealed on his Armchair Expert podcast that he had now reset the clock and titled the episode "7 Days", revealing that it had only been that long since being completely sober.
The actor fell off the straight and narrow path following his motorcycle accident in August of this year, after he was administered various painkillers to help heal his four broken ribs.
Despite the relapse and moment of weakness, Bell told the talk show host that he's doing much better.
"He is actually doing really great," she told DeGeneres. "Everybody is up against their own demons. Sometimes it’s anxiety and depression. Sometimes it’s substance abuse."
The actress then continued on to say that she and her husband did have a plan in place in order to help him manage his medication, but admitted that it didn't work out the way they both intended.
"The thing I love most about Dax is that he was able to tell me and tell us and say, 'We need a different plan.' We have a plan: if he has to take medication for any reason, I have to administer it. But he was like, 'We need a stronger plan,'" she explained.
"'I was faltering,'" Bell said Shepard told her. "'I have to do some sort of emotional work to figure out why I wanted to use again.'"
Bell then explained that her husband naturally has an addictive personality and that even something like recovery can be addictive to him.

"He’s addicted to evolving," she shared. "He was like, 'I don’t want to risk this family and I did, so let’s put new things in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again.'"
Bell admits that it's this very attitude that made her fall so hard for him in the first place.
"I will continue to stand by him because he’s very, very worth it," she said, disclosing that Shepard is back in therapy and doing everything he can to ensure that it won't happen again.
