Niecy Nash has opened up about her relationship with new wife Jessica Betts for the first time! In an exclusive interview for People, Nash talked about her open-minded view when it comes to love, and what led her and Betts to connect.

Nash calls her wife "the most beautiful soul I have ever met"

Nash explained that she fell in love with Betts for who she is as a person. "[My marriage] has absolutely nothing to do with gender and it has everything to do with her soul," she said of Betts. "She is the most beautiful soul I have ever met in my life." She then went on to say that while she's now in love with a woman, throughout her life she has been open to finding love with whoever she's attracted to.

"I was not suppressing my sexuality my whole life. I love who I love," Nash shared. "At one point in my life, I married twice and I love those people. And today I love this person. I've done everything I wanted to do on my own terms and my own way. So my choice now in a partner has nothing to do with who I've always been. It's a matter of who I am in this moment."

Nash on Betts: "I loved her before I was in love with her"

Nash surprised fans last month when she revealed on Instagram that she had married Betts! Many people saw it as Nash's coming out, but Nash herself has a different take on things. "I don’t feel like my marriage is my coming out of anywhere," she explained, "but rather a going into myself and being honest about who I love. And I’m not limiting myself on what that love is supposed to look like."

As People mentions, the couple first met online back in 2015. Nash says that she and Betts "were friends, but I never saw her as someone I would date," especially since she was "happily married" to her ex-husband Jay Tucker back then. However, after Nash and Tucker split up in October 2019, something changed for the actress.

"I loved her before I was in love with her because she is such a special human being. But we began to see each other in a way we never had before," Nash shared of her relationship with Betts. "Sometimes you get so broken by love, you run from it. But I’ve learned that you should always hold space for magic because it can happen at any time."

Nash and Betts had an intimate, socially distanced wedding

Nash and Betts were married on August 29 in Ventura County, California— two days before Nash shared the happy news on Instagram! As People reports, the newlyweds said "I do" in front of a total of 24 friends and family members during the "rustic chic" wedding, which was planned by William P. Miller.

Making sure to observe health and safety protocol because of the coronavirus pandemic, Nash and Betts gave guests face masks with "#LoveWins" written on them, as well as personal hand sanitizers. Chef Will Jones provided the cuisine for the event, and there was said to be lots of dancing!

Nash and Betts were also able to take a mini honeymoon to Santa Barbara shortly after the wedding. "I’ve got my feet up, I’m looking at the ocean and I’ve got the greatest love of my life in my peripheral," Nash told People of the experience. "I couldn’t be happier."
