Rachel Leah Bloom was born on April 3, 1989 in Manhattan Beach, California. While she grew up there, she later went on to attend New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, majoring in theatre. Bloom is Jewish, and was once roommates with Broad City star Ilana Glazer!

In college, she was the head writer and director of the sketch comedy group Hammerkatz. She also told Daily Actor that another sketch group, Upright Citizens Brigade, taught her a "very specific" approach to comedy. In 2018, Bloom's new musical comedy show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend premiered, where she played "Rebecca Bunch".
