Sean Penn flees Ukraine: "Our country is grateful to him"
Sean Penn documented the escape on his way out of Ukraine. He posted an image on Twitter that was affecting for many commenters. The photo shows Penn with a suitcase walking past a mile-long line of cars.
He wrote: "Myself & two colleagues walked miles to the Polish border after abandoning our car on the side of the road. Almost all the cars in this photo carry women & children only, most without any sign of luggage, and a car their only possession of value."
Sean Penn has made it across the border, but will continue to help and document the refugee crisis. Media reports say over a million people have left their homes in Ukraine in the first week of the invasion.
For his aid to the Ukrainian people, the Oscar-winner was already praised by the government. In a statement to Newsweek, they said: "Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty."
