Hollywood legend Sidney Poitier has died at the age of 94.

His death was announced by Fred Mitchell, the Foreign Minister of the Bahamas. A cause of death has not yet been confirmed. Poitier passed away in the Bahamas on Jan. 6.

Sidney Poitier went down in film history when he became the first Black actor to win an Oscar.

In 1964, he won Best Actor for the film Lilies of the Field. In 2002, he also received the prestigious Academy Honorary Award for his life's work.

The trailblazing star also had memorable roles in classics such as Porgy and Bess, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night. Poitier had later roles in titles like Stir Crazy and Sneakers

He leaves behind his wife Joanna, six daughters, and other family members.
