"You take the red pill... you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes," says Laurence Fishburne's "Morpheus" in the memorable scene from 1999's The Matrix.

Since The Matrix came out, the iconic red pill/blue pill dichotomy has come to represent either: A) seeing behind the oppressive deception in everyday reality (the red pill), or B) remaining blissfully ignorant about one's surroundings (the blue pill).

And, on Sunday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took up the film's red pill reference, which, in online circles, has come to serve as an indicator of political beliefs.

In recent weeks, Musk has taken to Twitter with calls for the re-opening of his company's factories amid COVID-19, encouraging his followers to question the legitimacy of the shutdown amid the health crisis and its corresponding economic repercussions.

In a new tweet, Musk reiterated this type of belief by making a Matrix reference, tweeting out "Take the red pill" — i.e. resist, question authority — to his 34 million followers.

Elon Musk, Ivanka Trump & Lilly Wachowski feud over Matrix reference

US President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, appeared to be a fan of Musk's thinking, as she quoted his tweet and said, "Taken!"

But Matrix co-creator Lilly Wachowski was no fan of the embrace of her creation for their political aims.

On Sunday afternoon, Wachowski responded with a tweet of her own, saying, frankly, "F--- both of you."

As People reports, Wachowski is often vocal on Twitter in support of liberal causes and LGBTQ+ rights.

Lilly and Lana Wachowski were known professionally as the Wachowski brothers when the Matrix films came out in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Both announced their transitions as women in the 2010s and are now credited as the Wachowskis.

The weekend Twitter exchange quickly went viral, with both Musk's and Wachowski's tweets accumulating hundreds of thousands of likes.
