This week, he has made headlines once again for addressing something legendary film director Martin Scorsese had said about the Marvel genre of movies and what they bring, or rather don't bring, to the cinema. It all started back in 2019 when Scorsese was asked if he had seen a Marvel film to which the director replied:

“I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.” He continued: “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Tom Holland Hits Back At Martin Scorsese

At the time, a lot of Marvel fans took issue with Scorsese's statement, but the cast of the films were mostly silent. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week, Tom Holland was asked about Scorsese's previous comments.

“You can ask [Martin] Scorsese ‘Would you want to make a Marvel movie?’ But he doesn’t know what it’s like because he’s never made one - I’ve made Marvel movies and I’ve also made movies that have been in the conversation in the world of the Oscars, and the only difference, really, is one is much more expensive than the other. But the way I break down the character, the way the director etches out the arc of the story and characters — it’s all the same, just done on a different scale. So I do think they’re real art.”

Holland's comments echoed what many fans of the Marvel films firmly believe. He went on to compare his sentiment to some of his "Avengers" co-stars:

"- I mean, you can also ask Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr. or Scarlett Johansson — people who have made the kinds of movies that are ‘Oscar-worthy’ and also made superhero movies — and they will tell you that they’re the same, just on a different scale. And there’s less Spandex in ‘Oscar movies.'”

It's unlikely Scorsese will have anything to say in response. At the moment, Holland is flying high on the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opened to incredible box office numbers and is still in theaters! And as one of the hottest stars on the planet at the moment, it's hard not to agree with Tom these days!
