Tyler Perry: The Haves and the Have Nots Creator's Rise To Fame
Tyler Perry was born Emmitt Perry Jr. September 13th, 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana to a family in poverty. He also suffered terrible abuse at the hands of his father also named Emmitt so when he was only 16 years old he had his name legally changed to Tyler to distance himself from his abusive dad. Young Tyler was inspired by The Oprah Winfrey Show to try and heal through writing, which led him to begin creating. He told Forbes "I love when people say you come from 'humble beginnings. [It] means you were poor as hell."
He wrote his first play I Know I've Been Changed that began gaining attention in the theater circuit. Tyler wrote scripts and sold cars to raise funds for his new ventures and ended up raising enough money to produce his first major film Diary of a Mad Black Woman that ended up grossing over 50 million dollars! He continued to produce content centered on Black stars and for wider audiences and learned via Oprah he needed to produce his own projects to end up keeping the profits. So now he owns his own production company and does it all: produce, act, direct, write, and direct.
He teamed up with Oprah to produce the award-winning film Precious and continued to create Made sequels that were endlessly entertaining. He produced countless successful sitcoms like Tyler Perry's House of Payne, Meet the Browns, and soap operas on the OWN Network like The Haves and the Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor. The Haves and The Have Nots has been running since 2013 and continues to increase in ratings, often breaking records.
