The 74-year-old guitarist railed against his understanding of cancel culture and political correctness in a new interview, in which he added: "Life doesn't have to be like that."

Comparing today's generation to his own, May said: "We think in different ways, but they weren't necessarily worse ways." He cited, for example, that Queen singer Freddie Mercury was an LGBT man from Zanzibar, but "nobody ever, ever discussed it."

May's comments came after The BRIT Awards chose to merge the male and female Artist of the Year categories. He says the decision was made "without thinking of the long-term consequences."
