Alice Heine was the first American to marry a European monarch to the throne. She went with Prince Albert I of Monaco, in Paris, on October 30, 1889. When the hapless lovers first met on the island of Madeira, both already had children from their previous marriages (Alice had become a widow at 22 and Albert's first marriage was annulled after the birth of his son, Prince Louis II) and it is said that their attraction was immediate.
