Queen Elizabeth (92) has made what the Guardian refers to as a cryptic intervention in the current turbulent British political landscape. The U.K is set to leave the European Union on 29th March, but a concrete plan for Great Britains's future relationship with Europe is yet to be put in place. Since the divisive vote in June 2016, British politics has taken on a distinctly new face, one that is harder set, and more rugged around the edges. Political parties have become divided and tension is at an all time high.

Her Majesty is known for never interfering in politics; the modern monarchy is one that lives on thanks to the importance of ceremony and tradition, and a fair share of charitable work, but politics has never been its precedent.

The Queen's speech at the Sandringham Women's Institute - a comment on the current Brexit crisis?

While the Queen abstained from referring to Brexit directly in her speech at the Sandringham Women's Institute last week, many believe that her words were intended to serve as a call to end the current state of high political tension.

"Of course, every generation faces fresh challenges and opportunities. As we look for new answers in the modern age, I for one prefer the tried and tested recipes, like speaking well of each other and respecting different points of view; coming together to seek out the common ground; and never losing sight of the bigger picture".

Respect as a "good first step towards a greater understanding"

The qualities, or "recipes", advocated by the Queen, if followed, could not only perhaps aid a reduction of tension, and indeed open aggressiveness, in the House of Commons, but also help alleviate pressure from various extreme political movements.

Her Majesty went on to add that the approaches she had outlined were timeless and for everyone, a sentiment that echoed the one put forward in her Christmas broadcast, in which she stated, "even with the most deeply held differences, treating the other person with respect and as a fellow human being is always a good first step towards greater understanding".
