Prince William and Duchess Kate had the opportunity to engage in conversation with Irish artists, athletes, businesspeople, and charity workers at the reception. Kate and William each enjoyed sipping Guinness, and William talked about how they were following in the footsteps of Queen Elizabeth. The Queen herself had popped into the pub during a royal tour of Ireland in 2011, where she was shown how to "pour the perfect pint," in William's words.

"Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you it is not often that I find myself following the Queen to a pub!" William exclaimed. "But I am looking forward to testing for myself the theory that Guinness tastes even better in Ireland than overseas!"
