Meghan Markle has made history with the British Royal Family—yet again. After formally walking away from her royal duties with husband Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex has broken with another of the many traditions of the Crown, becoming the first "royal" to vote in a U.S. presidential election.

Meghan Markle becomes the first "royal" to vote in an election

According to a close source, Meghan Markle this week cast a vote in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, becoming the first British royal to get involved in a state election. While she's no longer a working royal family member, Meghan is married to Prince Harry and they still hold the titles The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

As Newsweek reports, the former actress took up her civic obligations as a U.S. citizen and voted. Election Day is today, Nov. 3, with voters heading to the polls and President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, and Democrat Joe Biden leading their parties.

Although the source did not comment on how Meghan voted — if it was early, by mail, in person, or on Election Day — they did ensure that the mother-of-one made her decision in a timely manner.

With her vote, Meghan Markle not only marks a royal milestone, but she also breaks from the long-standing tradition preventing members of the Royal Family from engaging in political affairs.

"As Head of State The Queen has to remain strictly neutral with respect to political matters," reads the website of the Royal Family. "By convention, The Queen has does not vote or stand for election."

Although it's not a law, this rule had been upheld, and Royal Family members have likewise avoided political statements. But with Prince Harry marrying an American citizen—and the Duke and Duchess stepping away from royalty—Meghan has altered this tradition, which some have called outdated.

Last month, the couple also made a speech on voting in a message with TIME magazine, an unprecedented move for figures associated with royalty.
