In 2017, Prince William and his brother Prince Harry spoke for the first time about the death of their mother Princess Diana.

In the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William and Harry opened up and highlighted the humanitarian work of the Princess of Wales on the 20th anniversary of her death.

Prince Harry & Prince William's last phone call with Diana

In the interview, Harry and William also touched on the last phone call they had with Diana, who passed away tragically in a car crash on Aug. 31, 1997. "All I do remember is probably regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was," Prince Harry recalled, sadly.

The brothers spoke openly in the rare documentary, which they took part in to show another side of their beloved mother. However, they did not share the exact contents of the final call with Diana. Prince William said he remembers the last words they shared together, but he chose not to repeat them for the film.

Prince Harry and Prince William: Not all is for the public

The young princes didn't really enjoy talking to their parents on the phone and were "in a desperate rush" to get back to fun with their cousins, Prince William explained. Of course, the brothers, who were 15 and 12 at the time, had no knowledge that it would be the final time they'd speak to their mother, who died in a fatal car accident just hours later.

William said: "That phone call sticks in my mind quite, quite heavily." Harry added: "Looking back on it now it's incredibly hard. I have to sort of deal with that for the rest of my life."

Now in 2021, Prince William and Prince Harry will reconnect in the UK this July to unveil a statue at Kensington Palace in honour of Princess Diana. The event will be held on what would've been her 60th birthday.
