Prince William is acknowledging the difficult experience that frontline health workers are facing amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The Duke of Cambridge voiced this concern for the well-being and mental health of NHS staff in a surprise appearance on BBC's The One Show on Thursday.

The program aired an exclusive clip that, according to Hello!, was filmed while William was making the documentary Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health — which also made its debut on Thursday evening.

In particular, his message emphasized recognition of the workers' strength and sacrifice, but also their vulnerability, which is where a strong mental health initiative comes into play.

"We made the NHS frontline staff, rightly, heroes," he began. "But in doing so, we once again, give them the burden that we gave our soldiers fighting in the war, where everyone was so grateful and wanted to show their appreciation as to their fighting for their freedoms and everything. And I think we've got to be very careful with the language that we use."

The Duke of Cambridge then shared his thoughts on launching this conversation surrounding mental health and frontline workers.

"They should rightly be hailed as superstars, and brave, and wonderful staff; but I'm very conscious from a mental health point of view that we don't alienate some of them.

"Where they feel that once they have this hero tag, they can no longer shake that, and therefore they can't ask for support, they have to be this strong pillar of strength, when actual fact what we need them to be is examples of positive mental health.

"Doing the job, beating this pandemic, helping and caring for so many people, but also looking after themselves so that they come through this in one piece and we're not having broken NHS staff all over the country."

"We really have got to be prepared for a different mindset for mental health going forward," he added. "And I want to make sure that we can support the hospitals that are struggling to prioritize their mental health for their staff."

Prince William continues to promote conversation of mental health

The appearance on The One Show was the latest of many recent efforts by Prince William to encourage open conversation about mental health.

Just in the past few weeks, he and Kate Middleton have participated in the Mental Health Minute, while other previews for his new mental health film have spotlighted men's mental health and anxiety.

Meanwhile, Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health aired Thursday evening on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
