Prince William is currently touring Scotland from May 21 to 27.

In Edinburgh on Saturday, he addressed the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland as Lord High Commissioner. Among other things, the Duke of Cambridge revealed that Scotland is home to some of his happiest but also his saddest memories.

Prince William learned of Diana's death at Balmoral

Prince William experienced the most terrible moment of his life in a Scottish castle: "I was in Balmoral when I was told that my mother had died," he said. The young prince also spent the days after the terrible news in this area.

"Still in shock, I found sanctuary in the service at Crathie Kirk that very morning," he continued. "And in the dark days of grief that followed, I found comfort and solace in the Scottish outdoors. As a result, the connection I feel to Scotland will forever run deep."

Prince William and Duchess Kate met in Scotland

On the other hand, one of Prince William's happiest moments came in Scotland, when he first met with his wife, Kate Middleton. The future husband and wife were studying there at the University of St. Andrews.

"Needless to say the town where you meet your future wife holds a very special place in your heart," said the prince.

Today, William and Kate's children also know what the beautiful country means to their parents: "George, Charlotte, and Louis already know how dear Scotland is to both of us and they are starting to build their own happy memories here too," Prince William explained.

The comments came after a busy week for Prince William, who is now in Scotland after getting vaccinated and responding to the outcome of an investigation into Princess Diana's 1995 Panorama interview.
