The photo, which was released on the royal family's official Instagram, shows the then still Princess Elizabeth with Queen Elizabeth I in 1951, one year before Elizabeth ascended the throne after her father's death in 1952.

"Today may be a different and difficult day"

The caption of the throwback picture read as follows: "Today is Mothering Sunday. The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, is pictured with her mother, Queen Elizabeth in 1951. Mothering Sunday is a chance to thank and celebrate all mothers and caregivers, wherever they may be."

"Today may be a different and difficult day for those who would usually plan to spend time with their mothers, as we adapt to the necessary changes and disruption to our normal routine and regular patterns of life. But for all Mums everywhere, we are thinking of you, and wish you all a very special Mother's Day."

Certainly a great and uplifting message in strange times. We will keep you posted with more stories on the royal family right HERE...
