Starting March 31, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer be so-called senior members of the royal family. But before Harry and Meghan leave the UK to retreat to their home on Vancouver Island in Canada, we want to take another look at the relationship between Duchess Meghan and Queen Elizabeth II.

Because with all the talk about the Megxit and Meghan not bringing Archie over to the UK this time, many people forget that these two have actually formed a great friendship over the past few years.

Meghan about the Queen: "An incredible woman"

After her engagement to Prince Harry was announced in November 2017, Meghan opened up about her very first encounter with Queen Elizabeth II and said it was "incredible to meet her through his [Harry's] lens. Not just with his honour and respect for her as the Monarch, but the love he has for her as his grandmother."

"All of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. And she's an incredible woman."

The Queen's corgis love Meghan!

And even Queen Elizabeth's corgis took a liking to the former actress, as Prince Harry explained in their joint interview for the BBC: "And the corgis took to you straight away… I've spent the last 33 years being barked at; this one [Meghan] walks in, absolutely nothing."

Soon after Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's wedding in 2018, the Queen and Duchess Meghan went to Cheshire together for their first royal engagement on their own. The royal pair opened the new Mersey Gateway Bridge and were pictured laughing and joking during their outing.

Queen Elizabeth still supports Harry & Meghan

Earlier this year, the Sussexes made the surprise announcement that they would be stepping back from the royal family, but Buckingham Palace announced quickly after that "everything they do will continue to uphold the values" of the Queen.

Following the Megxit-announcement, the Queen also said in another statement that "Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family" and she is supporting their wish for a more independent life!
