Marriage Story is an insightful drama directed by Noah Baumbach. The film follows the difficulties accompanying the divorce of a couple played by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. The couple has a son together, so lawyers and a custody battle complicate their initially amicable separation.

Marriage Story received acclaim for its writing and devoted acting performances. At the upcoming Oscars this Sunday, February 9, it is nominated in six categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay.

What you need to know about Marriage Story

The film is in part based on the real life experiences of the film's writer and director, Noah Baumbach. He earlier experienced a divorce with his first wife, actress Jennifer Jason Leigh. He is now married to fellow 2020 Oscar-nominee Greta Gerwig (who directed Little Women).

Baumbach is also known for directing films including The Squid and the Whale and Netflix's The Meyerowitz Stories.

Marriage Story was a viral sensation when it first streamed on Netflix in December 2019. Social media users debated the case for supporting Driver's or Johansson's character in the film. Meanwhile, others felt that the film's message was to highlight mutual flaws and the undying connection in any relationship.

At major awards shows prior to the Oscars, Marriage Story has received many nominations. But its strong lead performances have been overshadowed thus far by Joaquin Phoenix's and Renée Zellweger's wins in the Lead Actor and Lead Actress categories.

However, Laura Dern has so far swept the awards season in the Supporting Actress category for her performance as a hip and authoritative lawyer in Marriage Story.
