The breakout star of Disney+'s The Mandalorian nearly had... well, a rather startling appearance.

"Baby Yoda" emerged as a viral phenomenon when he debuted last year in season 1 of The Mandalorian. The little guy earned many fans with his cute appearance and penchant for hot drinks.

But "The Kid" almost looked very different.

The Mandalorian: "Baby Yoda" original drawings revealed

In episode 5 of the Mandalorian's Disney+ behind-the-scenes documentary, showrunner Jon Favreau opened up about the early struggle to arrive at the perfect design for "Baby Yoda."

"We got lots and lots of drawings," Favreau explained. "Some of them were too cute, some of them were too ugly, some of them were the wrong proportions."

Some of these visuals are included below. The hairy and large-eared design (on the left) particularly attracted viral attention when fans saw what could've been for "Baby Yoda."

To say the least, these early concepts were a far cry from the end product who stole the hearts of Star Wars fans everywhere. Favreau went on to recall how "Baby Yoda" as we now know him came to be.

"Finally there was one image that Chris Alzmann did that had [Baby Yoda] wrapped up in what looked like a piece of a flight jacket," Favreau added.

"His eyes were a little weird, and he looked a little out of it, there was something a little off with it. But we found it charming, and that became the rallying image that we said, 'This is good.' And it developed from there."
