'Cast Away' Turns 20 Today! Here Are 10 Facts

There are many figures in pop culture that are synonymous with being stranded on a tropical island: "Robinson Crusoe", Swiss Family Robinson, and "Gilligan". The goal with Cast Away was to fashion a modern-day inclusion on that list and the filmmakers succeeded with their character "Chuck Noland".

In the 90s, Tom Hanks went from being a Hollywood actor to being THE Hollywood actor. In that decade, he won two Oscars back-to-back and is only one of two actors to accomplish this feat. The list of his movies running up to the year 2000 is very impressive: Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, Toy Story, and Toy Story 2. Also in the 90s, he also began to write, direct, and produce entertainment.

Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis is likewise a talented individual. His films preceding the 21st Century include such known titles as the Back to the Future Trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Contact. Cast Away was a reunion for Tom Hanks & Zemeckis and the film celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. It is often referenced in memes warning people not to travel with Tom Hanks.
