On Wednesday, a new trailer for the upcoming Disney movie Cruella dropped, which sees Emma Stone portray a young "Cruella de Vil"! Cruella will be released in May, and tell the untold backstory of how the 101 Dalmatians villain came to be. Here's what we know so far!

Emma Stone's newest role has her embodying an iconic Disney villain! As Entertainment Tonight shares, the first trailer for Cruella— the live-action prequel to Disney's 101 Dalmatians has been released, and it sees Stone stepping into the sinister shoes of "Cruella de Vil"!

Stone's Cruella sheds light on character's backstory

Stone is heavily featured in the trailer for Cruella, which seems to be a dark take on the titular villain's origin story. As Entertainment Tonight shares, the film takes place in London during the 1970s, and sees Stone playing a younger version of "Cruella," who's first known as "Estella de Vil".

"From the very beginning I realized I saw the world differently from everyone else," Stone can be heard saying as "Cruella" in a voiceover. "That didn't sit well with some people, but I wasn't for everyone. I guess they were always scared that I'd be a psycho." In 2019, Disney released a sneak peek still from the film, which gave a first look at Stone in character!

Cruella also stars Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Frey, Mark Strong, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Jamie Demetriou, and Emily Beecham. The film is currently set to be released on May 28, 2021, but at this time it's unknown if it will go direct to theatres or end up streaming digitally.
