Grey's Anatomy has tapped Peter Gallagher to join its cast when the show returns! As Deadline reports, Gallagher will be coming to Grey Sloan Memorial in season 18, and a few details about his new character have already been shared.

Gallagher to play new Grey's Anatomy doctor

Grey's Anatomy will see Peter Gallagher take on the role of "Dr. Alan Hamilton". Interestingly enough, his character is said to have a past with "Dr. Ellis Grey," who was "Meredith's" mother. Fans won't have to wait long to meet "Dr. Alan Hamilton" either, since his first appearance will be in the season 18 premiere!

It was recently shared that Kate Burton will also be appearing in the season premiere as "Dr. Ellis Grey" as well. Her return has caused speculation that the show will include a flashback sequence that involves both "Ellis" and "Alan," given Gallagher's connection to Burton's character.

Grey's Anatomy has seen some major changes over the past season, with Giacomo Gianniotti and Jesse Williams both leaving. But despite speculation that the hit medical drama could be wrapping up, back in May it was announced that the show was renewed. Gallagher was recently seen on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist as "Mitch," a father with progressive supranuclear palsy. We're excited to see what he brings to Grey's Anatomy, and how exactly "Alan" and "Ellis" are linked when the show returns on September 30!
