Filmmakers working on The Lord of the Rings trilogy viewed the production as the world's largest home movie or as a travelling circus. Screenwriter Fran Walsh felt like she was laying down the track in front of a moving train.

Multiple units were working simultaneously all over New Zealand and Jackson had to use live satellite feeds to supervise the whole production.


The Lord of the Rings filming locations were sometimes so remote that the crew packed emergency kits in case helicopters couldn't bring them home at the end of the day.
