The inspirational Obama women are speaking out
Malia Obama is breaking silence in the new documentary Becoming, which will follow the life of the former First Lady, and international feminist icon, Michelle Obama.
Along with Malia, Sasha Obama and Barack Obama will also be those to appear in the film, and the family is sharing what it's like living with Michelle behind closed doors.
Despite being away at college, Malia makes an appearance in the film visiting her mom backstage during her book tour, and praises her mother.
"You're so good, I love you too much," says Malia. She continues on to say that she "cried again" watching her mom, to which Michelle laughs and says, "Why you always crying?"
"This has demonstrated in a way — it’s just like, damn, those eight years weren’t for nothing. You know?" Malia says to her mom.
"You see that huge crowd out there and that last kind of speech you gave about — people are here because people really believe in hope and hope in other people," she continues.
She stops for a moment, and in a jovial tone adds, "And also every time you guys play Stevie Wonder, I don’t know, I cry a little bit."
The film is set to follow Michelle Obama around the country as she promotes her personal memoir, which also influences community activism empowering girls and young women.
Later in the film, Sasha Obama also has a few words for her mother, saying, "I’m excited for her to be proud of what she’s done ‘cause I think that’s the most important thing for a human to do is be proud of themselves."
"Barack and I are empty-nesters," Michelle Obama says in Becoming, "and that has been exhilarating: to watch the two little beans you were in charge of grow up."
Malia and Sasha are both attending University, and generally avoid the spotlight.
The former First Lady says, "With Sasha and Malia, [we try to] honour the unique flame each of them has inside. They are their own people, and that’s what I love about them. And they’ve got to have room to breathe and explore."
Becoming premieres Wednesday on Netflix.
