It's now official: the NCIS franchise is adding a new series set in Hawaii! The news was confirmed by CBS this Friday, and NCIS: Hawaii will debut in the 2021-22 TV season. Here are the first details on the new show in TV's most popular franchise.

NCIS: Hawaii is officially happening this year.

Back in February, we first heard rumours of an NCIS series set in Hawaii. But, this week, CBS confirmed that NCIS: Hawaii has been ordered and will arrive on TV screens soon. We have plenty of questions, but here's what we know about the show so far.

NCIS: Hawaii - Cast, release date?

NCIS: Hawaii will join the franchise this fall for the 2021-22 TV season on CBS. It does so after NCIS: New Orleans was cancelled after seven seasons and will conclude this May.

Cast members aren't yet known, but we do know a few big details about the series. For starters, it will follow an NCIS team in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor, and they'll be known as "NCIS: Pearl."

And, for the first time in the franchise, the team will be led by a female agent who, TVLine reported, will be named "Jane Tennant." The role hasn't been cast at this time.

According to Deadline, the series will follow "Tennant" and her team as they "balance duty to family and country, investigating high-stakes crimes involving military personnel, national security and the mysteries of the island itself."

NCIS: Hawaii premieres in 2021

NCIS: Hawaii will not be introduced through a "backdoor pilot," where the storyline and characters first appear on the main NCIS series before launching the new show. So expect to jump right into the series on premiere day this fall.

But crossovers with the other NCIS series could still be possible — NCIS: L.A. stars Eric Christian Olsen and Daniela Ruah even chatted about the Hawaii series in a recent interview.

It's also thought that the NCIS production will use the sets in Hawaii previously used for the popular series Hawaii Five-0, which ended in 2020. Stay tuned for additional details on NCIS: Hawaii as they come!

NCIS: L.A. was also renewed for season 13 and the main series was renewed for season 19 earlier this month.
