Whether or not it sounds like a good idea, a live-action Barbie movie is coming soon.

The film has been in development for a few years now, and actress Margot Robbie is still lined up to play the iconic "Barbie" doll. And "Barbie" now has her "Ken," too.

New Barbie doll movie casts "Ken" actor: Ryan Gosling

Joining Robbie as the co-lead is Ryan Gosling. Deadline announced this week that Gosling is in "final negotiations" to play the role of "Barbie's" partner.

Not a lot is known about the project but, interestingly, it's believed to be live-action and not animated. This all might sound strange or a bit silly, but there is reason to have hope for the movie.

The filmmaking partners Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are behind the movie, having written the script together. Gerwig will also direct.

They are both darlings of the independent film world. Gerwig is known for directing the recently Oscar-nominated Little Women and Lady Bird in addition to starring in Frances Ha.

Baumbach is the acclaimed director of Marriage Story, The Squid and the Whale, and the aforementioned Frances Ha, to name just a few.

So, at the very least, Barbie should be an unconventional and thoughtful take on a story about the world-famous Mattel dolls.

Oscar nominees Robbie, 31, and Gosling, 40, also make for a talented pairing to lead the film. It will shoot in early 2022 and is aiming for a 2023 release, according to Deadline.
