According to BoxOfficeMojo, there are currently 40 films in movie history that have generated 1 billion dollars or more at the box office, but only four of them are considered to be original stories. The remaining 90% are either sequels, remakes, trilogies, or adaptations of books or comics, and although movie history shows that usually, those fail to capture the magic of the original versions, some productions have also beaten that trend by providing outstanding quality.

The rise of sequels vs original stories

Due to the success and rise of sequels and adaptations, film companies might have to put original films on hold or not give them much attention; perhaps the success of remakes and/or trilogies comes from what fans experienced when they watched the original versions for the first time. Meanwhile, original productions like Zootopia and Frozen have definitely exceeded expectations with their revenue.
