Pierce Brosnan is bringing a must-see story to the screen in The Last Rifleman.
On Sept. 1, Deadline reported that Brosnan will star in the Irish film, which is inspired by the true story of D-Day veteran Bernard Jordan. In The Last Rifleman, Brosnan will play "Artie Crawford," an aging veteran and widower who flees his care home in Ireland to visit France on the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Per the exclusive Deadline report, The Last Rifleman is being prepared for a winter shoot in Ireland. Terry Loane, known for directing 2004 Irish film Mickybo & Me, is attached to direct the new movie.
The film's inspiration, Bernard Jordan, made headlines in 2014 when he disappeared from his care home in Hove, East Sussex. Employees reported the 89-year-old missing on June 5, only to learn that he'd secretly traveled to France to attend D-Day 70th anniversary events in Normandy on June 6. Jordan died the following year at the age of 90.

The Last Rifleman will be a rare new lead role for Brosnan, the 67-year-old Irish actor. The former James Bond star has primarily shifted to support roles in recent years, but even those have come somewhat sparingly.
Brosnan fans have recently seen the actor in sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, TV western series The Son, and Jackie Chan's The Foreigner. Earlier this year, Brosnan, who's dealt with difficult blows in his personal life, also marked the seventh anniversary of his daughter's passing following a battle with cancer.
