Superstore's sixth season will be its final one, as NBC has announced that the sitcom is officially coming to an end! As Entertainment Tonight shares, it was revealed on Thursday that Superstore won't be returning after the last half of the season— which began on October 29— airs in the spring.

Superstore ending comes not long after lead's departure

Superstore ending soon isn't a total surprise to fans, since one of the series' key players left earlier this year! America Ferrera, who played "Amy Sosa" on the show and executive produced it, made her final Superstore appearance last month. The series follows a group of retail employees who work at the fictional chain Cloud 9, and balances humour with topical issues— even addressing the current coronavirus pandemic.

NBC's President of Scripted Content, Lisa Katz, made a statement about the show ahead of its final season. "Superstore has always been a signature NBC series that has never failed to make us laugh while also thoughtfully examining important issues people care deeply about," Katz explained. "This has been an amazing group of writers, producers, actors and crew to work with and we are incredibly grateful for all their contributions. This show will forever hold its place among the top workplace comedies for which we have a cherished history."

Superstore called "one of the most socially impactful series"

Superstore was also praised by Universal Television President Erin Underhill. "We are incredibly proud of this show and the stories we were able to tell within the walls of Cloud 9," she shared. "We want to thank Justin Spitzer, who created this show, current showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller, all the writers, cast and crew. Not only did they bring us a comedy full of heart and humor, but Superstore also became one of the most socially impactful series on television."

The show's creator and showrunners also made a statement of their own! "We’re grateful to Universal Television and NBC for letting us make 113 episodes of a show we’re so proud of, and for giving us the chance to work with such an incredibly talented group of actors, writers and crew," they said. "We’re thankful most of all to the viewers who’ve stuck with us for the past six years (or discovered us somewhere along the way). We’ll do our best to go out strong and give you the satisfying ending you deserve."

Lauren Ash, who plays "Dina Fox," has commented on Superstore coming to an end as well! "It’s hard to know exactly what to say in moments like these. Superstore was a dream every day," Ash tweeted. "I made lifelong friends and helped create a show that I am beyond proud of. I am incredibly sad it’s ending but also insanely grateful for all it’s given me." While it's never easy when a beloved show ends, at least Superstore fans will get to see their favourite characters' stories finish playing out next year!
