Country music power couple Tammy Wynette and George Jones are the subject of a new TV series titled George & Tammy.

On Sept. 10, Deadline reported first casting news for the show: Jessica Chastain has landed the role of the "First Lady of Country Music" — Tammy Wynette. Here are the first details.

Tammy Wynette and George Jones TV Show in the works

Wynette, best known for track "Stand By Your Man," was a music star of the 1960s and '70s, later forming a "country music couple" with George Jones upon their marriage in 1969. They had a successful run of releases as a couple before divorcing in 1975. Wynette and Jones had one child, daughter Tamala Georgette, in 1970.

The country icons will take centre stage in George & Tammy, which is based on a book by the couple's daughter. The series is being developed by Spectrum and ViacomCBS, and it will premiere on Spectrum before also appearing on Paramount Network and a new streaming service by ViacomCBS, according to Deadline.

Jessica Chastain to play Tammy Wynette, country music icon

Two-time Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain will portray Wynette in George & Tammy. She's known for roles in Zero Dark ThirtyInterstellar, and The Martian. The 43-year-old actress will play Wynette at a time when she was in her late 20s and early 30s, presuming the series covers her years married to Jones (1969-1975).

Of the show's story, series creator Abe Sylvia told Deadline: "We all thought we knew who Tammy Wynette was, but there is so much more to her that we never saw. Jessica [Chastain] brings her incredible depth of intelligence, empathy and strength to peel back all the layers of this country superstar."
