And the Dundie for most-watched TV show in 2020 goes to... The Office.
According to the Nielsen TV ratings, The Office was the most-watched series on streaming platforms during 2020. The hit NBC series surpassed titles such as Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, NCIS, and The Mandalorian. By estimates, the popular comedy starring Steve Carell, John Krasinski, and Rainn Wilson was viewed for over 57 billion minutes in the United States alone.
The Office was the most watched streaming show in 2020
It's been seven years since The Office went off the air, but the workplace comedy is still making viewers laugh. Numbers for 2020's most-watched streaming show were no doubt helped by the fact that The Office was leaving Netflix for new streamer Peacock on New Year's Day 2021.
According to Nielsen, streamers in the U.S. watched over 57 billion minutes of The Office between Dec. 30, 2019 and Dec. 27, 2020. It outperformed other popular shows including Grey’s Anatomy (39 billion minutes), Criminal Minds (35 billion minutes) and NCIS (28 billion minutes).
Ozark, Crown, Tiger King among most-viewed original content
In the report, Nielsen also highlighted the popularity of original productions by Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ in 2020.
For original series, Ozark came out on top with over 30 billion minutes viewed. Meanwhile, Lucifer, The Crown, Tiger King, and The Mandalorian all obtained numbers above 14 billion minutes played.
Other titles that were among the most watched were: The Umbrella Academy, The Great British Baking Show, Boss Baby: Back in Business, Longmire and You. These all earned between 13 billion minutes and 10 billion minutes of streaming playback.
