The Umbrella Academy comic birthed an incredibly successful franchise and a huge fan base in a relatively short period of time. From a Dark Horse Comics production in 2007 to a smash-hit Netflix series in 2019, The Umbrella Academy comic has now taken over the world.

The Umbrella Academy Comic

The Umbrella Academy comic was originally written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá and released through September 14th, 2007, and February 20th, 2008. It was such a big hit in the graphic novel world that it won the coveted Eisner Award in 2008 for Best Finite Series/Limited Series.

Within the same year, The Umbrella Academy comic released a sequel The Umbrella Academy: Dallas, and then the creators took a lengthy hiatus. Finally, fans were relieved in 2018 when the creators released The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion

The Umbrella Academy Comic Series

The series begins when during a cosmic wrestling match, 43 superpowered infants were born randomly to women who were not in the slightest bit pregnant at the start of the day. 7 of the superpowered children were adopted and raised by the wealthy entrepreneur (and secret alien!) "Sir Reginald Hargreeves" in what he dubs "The Umbrella Academy."

The 7 are given both names and numbers, "Spaceboy," "The Kraken,"The Rumor," "The Séance," "The Boy/Number Five," "The Horror," and "The White Violin." The series then follows the children as they are older after living separate lives when their adoptive father passes away forcing them to reunite to fight evil as he had raised them.

The Netflix series does an incredible job of sticking to the well thought out narrative and fun storylines in The Umbrella Academy comic. Season 2 of the Netflix series has just been released on July 31st and has already become one of the most-watched series in countries all over the world!
