A first trailer has landed for George Clooney's new Netflix movie, The Midnight Sky. It's a science-fiction thriller, also directed by Clooney, and featuring a cast of stars including Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, and David Oyelowo.

Netflix describes The Midnight Sky as follows: "This post-apocalyptic tale follows Augustine (George Clooney), a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to stop Sully (Felicity Jones) and her fellow astronauts from returning home to Earth, where a mysterious global catastrophe has taken place."

The trailer previews the drama with Clooney and young actress Caoilinn Springall trying to reach the team of astronauts involved in the high-stakes conflict. The 59-year-old actor sports a beard in the film, which appears to centre on his character's psychology.

George Clooney's new Netflix movie premieres on Dec. 23

The film, an adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton's novel Good Morning, Midnight, hits Netflix on Dec. 23 — indicating Netflix's potential awards season hopes for the movie. 

For The Midnight Sky, Clooney gets behind the camera for the first time since 2017's Suburbicon. Previously, he's also directed and acted in titles including The Monuments Men, The Ides of March, Leatherheads, and Good Night and Good Luck.

This month, Clooney, 59, also signed on for his next movie, Calico Joe, a baseball drama, and reflected on nearly being cast in The Notebook in a recent interview.
