According to a GoFundMe appeal launched by the family, the singer suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage in September and had to undergo emergency surgery, during which doctors discovered several malignant tumors. Intensive treatment then began, but another brain hemorrhage occurred in November, leaving DeCarlo hospitalized for several weeks, reports People Magazine.
After a period of inpatient rehabilitation, he was initially able to resume his oncology treatment. A simple memorial picture can now be seen on Boston's official website: "Tommy DeCarlo - April 23, 1965 - March 9, 2026".
Tom Scholz Honors DeCarlo as a Voice and Family Man
Boston founder and songwriter Tom Scholz found profound words for his deceased bandmate. "This morning Tommy lost his fight with cancer. Everyone who has heard Tommy sing on stage, or on BOSTON albums, knows what a gifted artist he was," Scholz explained according to eu.usatoday.com.
At the same time, he emphasized DeCarlo's commitment behind the scenes: Hardly anyone knew how hard he had worked to grow as the band's lead singer - and how important his role as a father had been to him. Scholz described him as a former competitive athlete with a gentle nature, who many remember as a loving person who died far too young.
10 Years with Boston and His Own Project With His Son
Tom Scholz remembers how a DeCarlo cover version of "Don't Look Back" literally stunned him. He initially thought he was listening to an old recording with Brad Delp, reports eu.usatoday.com. DeCarlo was then invited to Delp's tribute concert, where he sang "Smokin'" and "Party" - the beginning of his more than ten years as Boston's touring singer.
While the band was on the road with the "Hyper Space Tour" in 2017 and celebrating the 50th anniversary of their debut album in 2026, DeCarlo built up his own project with his son at the same time: The band Decarlo released the albums 'Lightning Strikes Twice' (2020) and 'Dancing in the Moonlight' (2022). For fans, his distinctive voice remains inextricably linked to the history of Boston.
