On September 9, 2026, King Harald (d. 89) will be laid to rest in Oslo Cathedral. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the interment in the royal mausoleum at Akershus Fortress. It is already clear that it will not only be the Norwegian royal family and the Norwegian people who will bid him farewell.
Several European royal families have confirmed their attendance, along with heads of state from various countries. For security reasons, the full guest list will not be published; however, numerous delegations have already been announced.
These royals have already been confirmed
Among the guests who have confirmed their attendance is Prince Albert of Monaco. The Monegasque Palace announced: "Prince Albert of Monaco is traveling to Oslo to attend King Harald's funeral," according to Gala in a statement to NTB. It is not yet known whether Princess Charlène will also be attending. According to vg.no, Japan's Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko are also expected to attend. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium have also confirmed their attendance.
The Swedish Royal Family arrives with a large delegation
The Swedish delegation is particularly large. King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, Princess Madeleine and Christopher O'Neill, and Princess Christina and Tord Magnuson are expected to attend.
Carl Gustaf had already declared a period of national mourning at the end of August. Appointments were also canceled for the day of the funeral. Victoria will remain in Indonesia until shortly before the funeral. Members of the Dutch royal family will also be in attendance, including King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, Princess Beatrix, and Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia.
Frederik and Mary are changing their travel plans
King Frederik and Queen Mary are coming from Denmark. The couple's schedule was adjusted to accommodate their participation: Instead of a state visit to Belgium, they will both travel to Oslo. There, they will meet Philippe and Mathilde, who were originally supposed to be their hosts. Queen Margrethe, Harald's second cousin, is also expected to attend; this has not yet been officially confirmed. King Felipe and Queen Letizia have not yet confirmed their attendance from Spain. Felipe is the godfather of Ingrid Alexandra, who has been Crown Princess since her grandfather's death.
State Department Sets Rules for Invitations
According to reports, Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not publish a complete list of all pledges. Invited are countries with diplomatic missions in Oslo, as well as members of NATO, the EU, and the EEA that do not have diplomatic missions in Norway.
The cathedral can accommodate about 800 people. Those who are assigned a seat are placed according to rank, proximity to the deceased, and length of service. It remains unclear whether King Charles will attend in person or whether Prince William will represent the British royal family.
