  • Royals' focus on privacy and tradition

Prince William and Princess Kate, known for their regular attendance at the BAFTA Awards since 2017, skipped the red carpet this year. Their absence from the prestigious event on February 16, 2025, caused quite a stir, as they have always been a highlight of the ceremony in the past. According to 'Vanity Fair,' the couple opted out in favour of a Caribbean vacation.

William and Kate's absence at the BAFTAs

Kensington Palace has not provided an official reason for the couple’s absence, but reports suggest they were on a family vacation. 'The Mail' on Sunday reported that the couple, along with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, flew to St. Lucia on a British Airways flight on Thursday before taking a private plane to the island of Mustique.

The decision to miss the BAFTAs could coincide with the children's mid-year break, which started on Valentine’s Day.

Family vacation on Mustique

Mustique has long been a beloved destination for the family. They first visited the island when Prince George was just 18 months old. The February trip has since become an annual tradition for the royal family, with visits in the summer months as well. The island offers the kind of privacy the royals often seek, away from the public eye in England.

An insider shared in 2019: "It's incredibly private and incredibly discreet, but not remote. You know and trust the staff who work there."

Privacy and traditions of the royals

The decision to skip the BAFTAs might also be linked to a desire for privacy. While stars walked the red carpet in chilly London temperatures, the royals basked in the sun on Mustique. The island provides a welcome retreat after what has been an eventful year for the royal family.

At a recent event in London, Prince William remarked, “Film star essence… is so distant from reality,” hinting at his desire for a more normal, private life.
