Eugene Levy

Born on December 17, 1946, in Hamilton, Ontario, Eugene Levy's path to fame began with his early love of comedy. After attending McMaster University and gaining some early experience in theater, Levy found his way to the sketch comedy world. In 1976, he became part of the ensemble cast of 'SCTV' (Second City Television), the Canadian comedy show that would go on to make waves across North America. It was on 'SCTV' that Eugene truly began to shine.

The show, which parodied television and pop culture, provided a playground for Levy’s comedic talents, allowing him to flex his skills as both an actor and writer. Over the course of the show’s run, Levy became known for his quirky, often hilarious characters, including the iconic "Edith Prickley," a feisty, hard-nosed television personality, and "Crispin Glover," a parody of the eccentric actor. His work on 'SCTV' garnered critical acclaim and opened doors to opportunities that would define his career.

But it wasn’t just his performance skills that set him apart on 'SCTV.' Levy also honed his ability to create memorable, offbeat characters. Whether he was the straight man in a sketch or the over-the-top comedic foil, Levy was able to add his signature touch of oddball charm to every role. By the time 'SCTV' wrapped up in 1984, Eugene Levy had established himself as a comedic force to be reckoned with.

After 'SCTV,' Levy’s career continued to flourish, though it was a bit of a slow burn. He appeared in films like ‘Splash’ (1984), Armed and Dangerous (1986), and ‘The Mighty Ducks 2’ (1994), but it wasn’t until the late 1990s that he truly became a household name. In 1999, Levy landed the role of "Jim’s Dad" in the raunchy teen comedy ‘American Pie’.

As the father of the awkward but loveable "Jim" (played by Jason Biggs), Levy quickly became a fan favorite. His portrayal of "Jim’s Dad" was both absurd and endearing—offering comedic advice to his son about the birds and the bees while also providing some of the film’s most heartwarming moments. Levy’s deadpan delivery and skill for physical comedy made his character an unforgettable part of American Pie’s legacy.

The success of ‘American Pie’ would lead to several sequels, and Levy would reprise his role in ‘American Pie 2’ (2001), ‘American Wedding’ (2003), and the ‘American Reunion’ (2012), each time bringing his signature wit and charm to the role of "Jim’s Dad." His work in the ‘American Pie’ series helped solidify Levy’s place as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable and beloved comedic actors.

While the ‘American Pie’ franchise was a significant part of Levy’s career, it was his role in the TV show ‘Schitt’s Creek’ that would redefine his career and catapult him into a new level of stardom. Created by Eugene Levy and his son, Daniel Levy, ‘Schitt's Creek’ premiered in 2015 and would go on to become a cultural phenomenon.

Levy starred as "Johnny Rose," the patriarch of the wealthy Rose family who loses everything and is forced to move to the rundown town of "Schitt's Creek," a place they once bought as a joke. What makes "Johnny" such a memorable character is Levy’s incredible portrayal of a man trying to hold on to his dignity and family values while navigating the absurdity of their new life. As "Johnny," Levy showcased his ability to balance humor with real emotional depth, portraying a character who, while clueless in many ways, was also deeply caring and earnest.

This victory, in addition to the immense popularity of the show, proved that Eugene Levy was not just a comedic actor but a true force in television.
