Dan came out to his parents at 18, and they fully supported him. His father chose to wait for Dan to tell them, but his mother, eager to know, asked if he was gay. Dan often highlights their support as an example for other parents of LGBTQ2S+ youth.

Dan Levy's on-camera career started in 2006 as a co-host of MTV Canada's MTV Live. He showcased his versatility by co-writing, co-hosting, and co-producing 'The After Show' and its spinoffs. During his time with MTV Canada, he also hosted a holiday special and various events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

In 2013, Levy co-founded Not a Real Company Productions with his father, Eugene, and his uncle Fred. Together, they developed the pilot for 'Schitt’s Creek'. Dan cast his father and family friend Catherine O'Hara in the lead roles. Despite the show's success, Levy chose to end it after six seasons, citing his artistic control. According to Sally Catto, CBC's general manager for programming, 'Schitt’s Creek' was the number one scripted Canadian comedy on prime-time television in Canada since it launched in 2015.

Levy set a record with four Emmys at a single ceremony and won seven Canadian Screen Awards, including four for Best Comedy Series. He credits Netflix and the COVID-19 pandemic for expanding the show's American audience and believes it significantly impacted perceptions of the LGBTQ2S+ community with its realistic portrayal and positive representation.

In 2021, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his hosting stint on 'Saturday Night Live'. In 2023, he appeared on HBO's 'The Idol' and played "Vic" in Disney's 'Haunted Mansion'.
