Eva Marie Saint has died. The legendary American actress passed away of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 102. Her family was by her side, according to her spokesperson, Jeff Sanderson, as reported by t-online.
Saint was one of the defining stars of classic Hollywood and won an Oscar for her very first feature film. She remained a presence on both the big and small screens for decades, working with some of the greatest directors and actors of her generation and continuing to appear on camera well into her later years.
Eva Marie Saint Won an Oscar for Her Film Debut
Saint made her feature-film debut in Elia Kazan’s acclaimed 1954 drama On the Waterfront, starring alongside Marlon Brando. Her performance earned her the 1955 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, while the film itself won a total of eight Oscars.
Before making the leap to Hollywood, Saint had already built experience on stage and television.
Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, she initially considered becoming a teacher before pursuing acting and eventually studying at the prestigious Actors Studio in New York.
Alfred Hitchcock Made Her a Hollywood Icon
Saint achieved even greater international fame in 1959 when she starred opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller North by Northwest. Her portrayal of the mysterious Eve Kendall became one of the defining performances of her career.
She went on to appear in major productions including Exodus, Grand Prix, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, and The Sandpiper. Throughout her remarkable career, Saint worked with celebrated directors and shared the screen with stars including Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Warren Beatty, and Burt Lancaster.
Her accomplishments extended beyond film. Saint received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and, in addition to her Oscar, won an Emmy and received several Emmy nominations throughout her career.
Eva Marie Saint Put Her Family Before Hollywood
Despite her success, Saint eventually decided not to pursue her film career at the expense of her family. As a mother of two, she preferred working closer to home and increasingly took on television roles rather than committing to lengthy film shoots.
Her television career included numerous appearances, and in 1990, she won an Emmy for her performance in the miniseries People Like Us.
Away from the screen, Saint shared an enduring love story with director Jeffrey Hayden. The couple married in 1951 and remained together for 65 years until his death in 2016. They had two children, Darrell and Laurette.
Eva Marie Saint Continued Acting Into Her 80s
Saint remained active as an actress well into her later years. Wim Wenders cast her in Don’t Come Knocking in 2005, and the following year she played Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive mother, in Superman Returns.
In 2014, at the age of 90, she appeared in Winter’s Tale alongside Colin Farrell, once again demonstrating her enduring passion for acting.
Reflecting on performing later in life, Saint once spoke about how an actor’s own experiences can deepen their understanding of characters: “You've gone through different emotional experiences in your own life, and hopefully, you understand things better. And that makes you a better actress.”
With her death at 102, Hollywood has lost one of its last surviving links to the golden age of American cinema. From her Oscar-winning debut opposite Marlon Brando to her unforgettable performance in North by Northwest, Eva Marie Saint leaves behind an extraordinary legacy spanning more than seven decades.
