• Tragedy in the sports world
  • After the death of baseball star Tim Wakefield, his wife dies
  • Stacy also battled cancer

The baseball world is mourning the loss of Stacy Wakefield, wife of deceased MLB pitcher Tim Wakefield.

The Boston Red Sox confirmed Stacy's death in a press release on behalf of the Wakefield family: "It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt, Stacy, passed away today at her home in Massachusetts." Stacy was only 53 years old.

Tragic: Tim and Stacy Wakefield are dead

About five months ago, her husband Tim died of a brain tumor at the age of 57. Now the Wakefield family has to mourn again. Although the cause of Stacy's death has not been directly confirmed, she suffered from pancreatic cancer.

A former teammate of Tim's on the Red Sox revealed the couple's cancer diagnoses without their consent on his podcast a few months ago. After that revelation, the Red Sox asked for privacy for the Wakefields as they underwent treatment for their illnesses.

The couple, who married in 2002, leave behind two children, Trevor (19) and Brianna (17). In their grief, the Wakefield family thanked the doctors, nurses and caregivers for their unwavering support and asked for their privacy to be respected as they come to terms with this profound loss.
